About This Spot

Stepping into New Woey Loy Goey Restaurant is like slipping beneath the bustling streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown, descending into a quiet, unpretentious hideaway where familiar faces and comforting aromas mingle. This basement spot hums with the gentle rhythm of midday chatter and the clink of bowls, offering a welcoming pause from the city’s usual pace. The air carries a warm, lived-in feeling—less polished, more personal—where the focus is quietly on honest, flavorful food served up with genuine care.

Here, the menu unfolds like a well-loved family recipe book, full of comforting plates that feel like they've been nurtured and perfected over decades. Whether it’s a steaming bowl of hot and sour soup that teases the palate with its bold spices, or the satisfying crunch of salt and pepper chicken wings that call back to neighborhood gatherings, the dishes invite you to slow down and savor each bite. The familiar offerings of fried rice, potstickers, and honey walnut shrimp create a comforting tapestry that feels both nostalgic and rooted in tradition.

The atmosphere is refreshingly relaxed—a little rough around the edges but entirely sincere. The steady flow of regulars and families hints at the deep connections woven through the space; it’s the kind of place where servers know you, and conversations echo with an easy camaraderie despite quiet language differences. Here, affordability and generous portions draw in crowds, but the true attraction lies in feeling part of a small, welcoming community focused on the ritual of sharing good food and quiet moments.

In all, New Woey Loy Goey offers a grounded, authentic experience—a reminder that sometimes the richest local jewels are found below the surface, where stories simmer alongside the dishes, and every visit becomes a gentle rediscovery of Chinatown’s enduring spirit.

I been a customer here since my middle school days since I have connections with the owner. They have the best salt and pepper chicken wings that I have ever eaten. Cool little underground laid back spot that offers authentic Chinese food and service. They have a vast menu packed with many delicious options. It can be packed at times since it’s affordable and yummy. Definitely I will be back!

Hot tea. Hot flavorful food. Cold Budweiser. Friendly customer service. Clean bathroom. Everything was great except my water cup wasn’t too clean. They need a new dishwasher

Fun atmosphere...the food is wonderful. We had Orange Chicken and the Tomato Beef Chow Mein. Both dishes were very tasty!!! The Potstickers were really good too!!!

This basement restaurant is surprisingly clean and orderly compared to many other restaurants of the same era in Chinatown. They have many lunch specials under $10, see photo of the menu. Our lunch special also comes with a free light soup and tea. Consider some restaurants are now charging $2 per person for tea (we need to boycott those). The waitresses are very friendly and helpful which is unheard of in Chinese restaurants

If you like authentic Chinese food in a dive setting THIS is the place. I loved it! ( reminded me of our favorite NYC Chinatown place). When we entered it was all Chinese families eating there and our servers spoke very little English. Service was fast but not super helpful because of the language barrier. The hot and sour soup was delicious and quite spicy. My chow fun was awesome and the beef was very tender! And it was cheap!

Amazing food. The Peking pork ribs was perfectly sauced and sweet and savory. The black bean fish had this great umami flavor. The vegetables were garlicky and refreshing. The staff were nice and friendly. Large portions. Definitely will come again.
